ABROLHOS – Archipelago and National Park

The word Abrolhos is made by the verb “abrir”, that is “to open”, and by the noun “olhos”, that is “eyes”. The legend tells that the first Europeans, precisely the Portuguese, used this sentence when they arrived in that archipelago since they remained enchanted by the landscape.
Abrolhos is an archipelago located in the Atlantic Ocean, on the southern coast of the state of Bahia, Brazil. It is made by 5 islands, about 36 sea miles from the coast of Caravelas (about 65 Km).
The 5 islands are:

The last 2 islands, Sueste and Guarita, are closed, or better, it is forbidden to land on them.
The islands are placed in an area of 913 square km. That area is property of the Abrohlos Park, a National Sea Park, and under the control of the state agency IBAMA and of the Brazilian Navy.

Parque Nacional Marinho dos Abrolhos
The Abrolhos National Sea Park is a Brazilian national park located on the southern coast of the state of Bahia. But most important of all, it has been the first Brazilian park to receive the qualification of National Sea Park, with decree nr. 88.218 dated 06. April 1983. This demonstrates the beauty and the importance of this still uncontaminated area, preserved by this decree but also by other laws that protect the environment but still permit the population growth and its modernization requirements.

Place and highlights
The nearest city is Caravelas, 26 sea miles from the park.
Caravelas is about 800 Km far from Salvador, 250 km from Porto Seguro, 450 km from Vitoria and 100 Km from Nova Viçosa.
One can reach the Sea Park from all the main cities and the small cities along the coast and by many means.
First of all by a motor catamaran that would take between 2 hours and 2 hours and a half. Or by a launch which would take between 2,5 and 3 hours. But one can also take a panoramic ferry that can reach the park in about 5-6 hours and provide many comfort on board.
The show is assured. Besides the submarine passages, with rock formations that grow from the deep sea and reach the surface to make the various islands, there are also corals that are just as good as the most famous ones of Sharm and Maldives. The same sea fauna alone could represent an important attraction for diving lovers. The Park is open every day and there are daily boats offering individual and group tours for one or more days. In July the whales breeding period starts, just to add more show to the show, more feelings to feelings.
