Nova Viçosa – Bahia – Brazil

Located in the southern part of the state of Bahia, on the border of the Abrolhol Park, Nova Viçosa is a small town of 35.000 inhabitants that lives manly of tourism and of fish industry. There are also huge eucalyptus plantations for the paper industry. The population belongs to the Bahia culture, very friendly people open to welcome guests from every part of the world and always ready to involve tourists in local parties.
Since it is still not affected by the investments carried out on the northern coast of the state of Bahia (that by now has reached the European level both from the financial and tourist points of view) Nova Viçosa is currently a tourist resort with an ecological nature.
Very close to Caravelas, it is one of the small cities known in the entire world because in this area, from May to October, whales come for breeding.
But it is not all. Owing to its closeness to Vitoria, capital of the state of Espirito Santo, and since it represents the access to the sea for the state of Mina Gerais, the summer tourism level can be compared to that of the Italian coasts. It is very interesting to note that these two periods alternate and allow both kinds of tourists to fulfil their different expectations.

Up to now for various reasons the investments for tourism have been very few in this area. But now the government of Bahia and the federal government are reassessing the investments in this field, also owing to the high concentration grown up in the North (one for all Salvador de Bahia) so the South of Bahia will get the best advantages, Nova Viçosa included. In fact there are still many kilometres of the Bahia’s coast that are unknown to tourists and that, even if with a particular attention to Nature and ecology, the federal government wants to promote.
There are also incentives and reductions for those who want to start a productive or a service activity.
For Nova Viçosa there is a future of tourist, industrial and economical expansion but without forgetting that it must be a sustainable development, always on a human scale, without loosing the qualities that have made this area one of the most beautiful and well-known of the world: Nature and human relationships.
